Don’t be Fooled by “Diet” Foods!

Think you’re making good food choices, working out, but STILL not losing weight?   “Diet” foods may be sabotaging your efforts.  Here’s the scoop on some of the worst offenders…

1.  “Healthy” Salads — Any salad listed in the “lite” section of a menu must be a good choice right?  On the T.G.I. Friday’s® menu, the pecan-crusted chicken salad which contains mandarin oranges, dried cranberries, and celery, has 1,360 calories. Wow.

2.   Wraps  — Some tortillas can contain as many calories as 4 pieces of bread, more carbs, and twice as much fat. And that’s before you add any filling.   And a wrap has more room to spread things like mayo, cheese and dressing.

3.   Granola – Have you ever read the label of your favorite granola?  Most varieties are high in sugar, and the serving size is usually only ¼ to ½ cup.  If you’re filling your cereal bowl with this stuff every morning, no wonder you are not losing.  Instead look for low-sugar, minimal- ingredient granolas like Bare Naked, and limit your portions to 1 serving at a time.

4.   Dried Fruit – Dried versions of your favorite fruits are as much as four times the calories of their fresh counterparts.  (Keep this in mind when shopping for granola too as some varieties contain dried fruits!)

5.   Bran Muffins — the average bakery muffin can contain as many as 630 calories. It might be better than a banana or blueberry muffin because of the extra fiber, but most of them are still packed with sugar and butter. Eat one bran muffin from Dunkin’ Donuts® for example and you’ll be consuming 480 calories, 13 grams of fat, and 46 grams of sugar.

6.   Pumpkin-Flavored Baked Goods –  Like bran, pumpkin has lots of stuff that’s good for you. But pumpkin doesn’t mean diet food.  The pumpkin muffin at Dunkin’ donuts has 630 calories and 28 grams of fat.  A pumpkin muffin from Panera Bread® has 530 calories and 20 grams of fat, and the pumpkin scone at Starbucks® has 470 calories and 22 grams of fat!

7.   Sushi  (Fish wrapped in rice and seaweed) — Some sushi has calorie levels so high it might just shock you. Spicy tuna and other similar rolls can contain as many as 450 calories and 11 grams of fat (the bad kind) per serving.

8.   Olive Oil –: It’s a good fat and helps you burn fat. But don’t overdo it.  You only need two tablespoons per day to get the benefits. (Good “note to self” when dunking bread in it at a restaurant!)

9.   Anything marketed as “skinny” — “Skinny” varieties of drinks, ice cream, and other favorite indulgences might be better choices BUT pay attention to small serving sizes and read your labels!  A Skinnygirl Margarita, for example, at 100 calories per 4 oz, is not so “skinny” if consuming much more than 1 cup.

10.  Diet Soda – if you read my article last month you know I’m passionate about helping people “kick the can” for good!!  Zero-calorie diet soda may actually cause weight GAIN by preventing your body from properly absorbing the nutrients in other foods that you eat.

So how do you make the right choices in a world filled with “diet” traps?  Ask about nutrition and read food labels. You won’t even have to give up the foods you like because you’ll know how to work them into your food plan the right way.  After a while, you’ll be a pro at it and enjoy the weight loss that comes with it.

8 Weeks to a Better You – Tracy Line

8 Weeks to a Better You

Bob Fields

Bob Fields didn’t plan on entering the wellness industry; he simply found himself following a path.  Fields, a certified Personal Trainer, stumbled upon his first clients when he started going to the gym.   “I was working out and began teaching aerobics when people started asking me to teach them how to get fit” says Fields, “35 years later and I am still teaching wellness. “   Only now, he teaches in a classroom setting.

Fields is the creator of 8 Weeks to a Better You, an innovative program designed to give participants everything they need to know about living a healthier lifestyle.  “For years, I’ve trained people one on one” says Fields, “I discovered most clients have the same questions about how to improve their health.”  He realized there was a need for a class that could teach people the key components of overall wellness.

Fields knows first-hand about the struggles with and importance of a healthy lifestyle.  Both his father and sister died prematurely of heart attacks; his sister was only 23 at the time of her death.  It was then that Bob, who was overweight and out of shape at the time, made a complete life change.

Fields began exercising and made improvements to his diet.  He became certified as an aerobics instructor and began teaching classes. He also began weight training outside of class.  Soon his aerobic students began asking for help with their exercise programs.  Fields, who was a design engineer, decided to further his education so he could properly assist his students.  He became certified with ACSM, IDEA and ACE along with several others. His client list grew quickly.  Fields continued earning certifications, and in 1995 he quit his day job to pursue personal training full time.

Fields believes there are many components to wellness.  Understanding these components, and knowing how to incorporate them into your life is the key to successful change.  His program takes an in-depth look at all aspects of wellness.  Each session will offer a lecture from a local health industry expert followed by a question and answer session.  Presenters include a psychologist, medical doctor, nutritionist, cooking expert, anti aging and longevity expert and more.

While the program focuses on wellness, it is not centered on weight-loss.  “This is not Weight Watchers”, says Fields.  He contends that losing weight is only one component of health.  Fields believes proper nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress management are just as important as counting calories.   “All of these aspects are critical to one’s overall well-being and it’s important to understand their role in health” says Fields, “Not everyone understands for example that getting too little sleep can contribute to weight gain.”  This program gives individuals the information they need and allows them the opportunity to set and work toward personal goals at a pace they are comfortable with.

Presentations and discussions will be informative and interactive.  Participants will learn about conquering sugar addictions, overcoming self-defeating behaviors and learn how hormones affect weight loss.  In addition, Fields will demonstrate the proper use of gym equipment and will review ways to exercise at home with little to no equipment.  A review of various exercise classes will be given, and a cooking expert will give participants a taste of how easy it can be to create healthy meals.

The class is meant to both motivate and educate those who are interested in improving their health.  Fields is passionate not only about teaching people how to live healthier, but also in seeing them gain a better quality of life.  “I not only want people to get their money’s worth with this class” he says, “I want to see the changes unfold in their lives.” For information on 8 Weeks to a Better You, or to sign up, visit www.8weekstoabetteryou.com or call 317-502-7570.

Are You An Expert – Donna Phelan

Are You An Expert
Are You An Expert

Donna Phelan

I’ve trained with a 6th degree black belt and former international karate competitor for some time now.  Prior to that, I trained for several years at a local martial arts school.  While I liked the owners and students at the local school, and the workout was challenging, it didn’t take more than a few weeks of training with my current instructor to realize I was dealing with a totally different standard.  He is an “old school” instructor – training is as much about skill, discipline, and proper technique as it is about learning the simple mechanics.

When you visit a karate class, you will find the instructor addressing rows of students all dressed in their “gis” or traditional karate uniform.  At a glance, the students all look the same.  Soon you notice the pecking order.  The black, brown and higher belt ranks stand in the front row; the newest students, white belts, stand in the back.  Intermediate belts line up in-between.  This arrangement is as true in the old standard, as it is in the new standard.  The difference with the old standard was that a black belt actually meant something.  It signified an elite level of skill, training, and discipline that was earned and worn with pride.  Nowadays, a black belt indicates nothing more than a student who has memorized enough techniques and paid enough money.  To be certain, there are schools which still operate under the old standard, as there are still students in new standard schools who set their own bar and strive for a higher level of skill.  But, it is fairly easy nowadays for a karate black belt to masquerade as an expert – there are just too many schools which allow it.

This is simply not true with weight loss and fitness.  When the topic of my occupation comes up in social situations, I’m amazed by the number of fat, out of shape people who launch into a litany of how healthy they eat and how much they work out.  I simply nod politely and interject the occasional “is that so?”  After all, if an individual is perfectly content with herself, it doesn’t bother or concern me in the least.  Just like today’s karate black belt, however, she is masquerading as an expert.  Unlike today’s karate black belt, she can’t hide the deception by dressing a certain way or by standing in the front row.

If you are on a weight loss and fitness program it is easy to become discouraged when the fat does not drop off and the muscles don’t bulge as quickly as you would like.  The day will come, however, when you receive your first unsolicited compliment: “Hey, you’ve lost weight!  Looking good!”  Smile and enjoy it.  It means you are at the front of the class achieving an A+ in your new field of study.  You are recognized as an expert at being thin by actually being thin.  There is no way to deceive anyone on this.  Stop Being Fat!

The Fat Acceptance Movement – Donna Phelan

Donna Phelan
Donna Phelan

Donna Phelan

Every few weeks there is a news item, internet posting or magazine article about discrimination targeting the obese.  We’ve even seen the emergence of fat activist groups, such as the Fat Acceptance Movement.  I’m a strong believer that everyone has the right to be exactly who they want to be and if an individual is happy and secure as a fat person, it has nothing to do with me.  While the goal of acceptance is a worthy one on any level, the fact is, no organization will ever be able to dictate opinion.  Like it or not, no one ever comes to our weight loss program because they are happy with their weight.  They come to me because they’ve seen the stares, they’ve heard the sniggering, they’ve looked in a mirror and said, “I don’t want to live this way anymore.”

Fat activists will argue that fitness is not defined by a dress size.  This is true enough.  I’ve known many thin people who were completely unhealthy.  Statistically speaking, however, there is a direct, measurable correlation between Body Mass Index (BMI) and a number of chronic diseases, particularly diabetes.  But, this is not really about fitness and health, is it?  This is about self esteem and honesty.

I’ve been on both sides of the “Fat Acceptance Movement.”  As a fat child and teenager, I endured the taunts of my peers as well as frequent embarrassing situations created by insensitive adults.   In an effort to lose weight, I started exercising at the age of 11.  At the age of 19, I was the fittest fat person you would ever meet, far more fit than any of my skinny friends.  No one cared about my fitness.  My social life was defined by my fatness, despite our politically correct world which likes to pretend no one cares that you are fat.

To put it bluntly, there is no Fat Acceptance Movement.  We all resent the fat traveler crowding us from the next plane seat and judge the fat mom buying lunch for her kids at McDonalds.  Men everywhere will admit to looking at the chubby women perched on barstools in a singles bar, and then moving on.   This is a painful reality.  It IS unjust to judge people by their appearance.  Opinions can be based on ignorance, but they can’t be dictated.  If you are happy with yourself exactly as you are, thin or fat, carry on and more power to you!  If, however, you are NOT happy about being judged for your size, the unfortunate reality is that you will have far more success changing yourself than changing the opinion of the world.  Stop Being Fat!

Weight Loss Fundamentals – Sheila Henson

Clean Weight Loss - Sheila Henson

Weight loss requires skill development; it can be likened to baseball in this way.  Regardless of how much or how little weight one has to lose the fundamentals set the stage for success.  The pro player has learned to master the skills.   Yet, even at that level errors still occur; batters get struck out; fielders catch the ball, but the RBI still counts; and play goes on.  Likewise, the pro at weight loss must have a healthy understanding each time at bat does not guarantee a home run.

The question may not be what level of play are you at, but are you even in the game?  The stands are a great place to watch the game, but being on the field is the only place YOU get to play.  Are you ready?  Health & Nutrition Technology (HNT) will get you started.  Simply follow these easy weight loss fundamental steps and you will be on your way to losing those unwanted pounds:

1) Attend a free HNT information session. Go to www.hntindiana.com for complete listing of days/times/locations or call (317) 489-4817.

Addiction: The state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma (Dictionary.com)

The American Society of Medicine has defined addiction as a primary chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry.

Habit: An acquired pattern of behavior that often occurs automatically (Wikopedia)

A recurrent, often unconscious pattern of behavior that is acquired through frequent repetition. (Dictionary.com)

Waiting To Inhale

You are addicted to smoking.  Or are you addicted to the high and euphoric feeling you get from deep breathing? Bet you have never thought of it that way. If you have had the desire to quit smoking but are afraid of weight gain, this may help you gain the courage and strength to do it.

Smoking can give you a sense of euphoria and relaxation. It’s not necessarily the nicotine, it’s the deep breathing.  It is equally challenging to overcome the habitual oral fixation as kicking the nicotine addiction.  We are creatures of habit. As for me, I have never been addicted to smoking. But I will tell you what I have been addicted to: Daily Starbucks visits, mid afternoon “fun size” candy bars, and hitting snooze two times in the AM.

Statistics show that smoking can burn up to 400 calories a day. Often when someone quits smoking they turn to food to compensate for those lost calories. It goes back to that oral fixation or habit. If you gear your focus towards a different deep breathing as in Yoga or weight training, you will still be burning the 400-500 calories a day without the harm to your lungs.

Inevitably, you will put on weight if you do not find another way to burn those calories your body is use to burning. Looking at the math, that surplus of 400-500 calories a day plus an extra bag of chips you may find an extra pound a week and an extra inch a month to your waistline. YIKES!

Perspective is everything. This is true when establishing the meaning and goal of being clean and/or losing weight.  Something that is free of dirt is clean, right?  Or clean can be used in terms of an opportunity to enhance. (There are at least 30+ more uses of the term.)  In the same vein it could be said that a reduction of a few pounds is weight loss.  Or weight loss is the beginning of a new healthier lifestyle.  To complicate the simple topic more, throw in the concept of degrees to which something is clean.  In fairness though, it is in the details and the perspective of accomplishing these simple terms that make them complex.  How much, in what time frame, to what end result and most importantly what is the expected duration.

We at Health & Nutrition Technology (HNT) want to help you understand, accomplish, and sustain your weight loss goals cleanly.  HNT works with: Any adult who has more than 25 lbs to lose.  Our statistics demonstrate 80% of everyone we have worked with in Indiana (2002-2011) has lost 25 lbs or more in 20 weeks.  With an average weight loss of 50 lbs lost in the first 20 weeks that is maintained at 2 and 3 years out; many goals are met.  However, even more importantly than losing weight at that magnitude is the countless and far reaching positive results achieved.  Improved blood pressure, lowered blood sugar, increased mobility, and overall health improvements are repeatedly accomplished and sustained.

Please call (317) 489-4817 or visit www.hntindiana.com for simple, clean, sustainable weight loss you can achieve.  Our motto: Change your life … so you can live it!

Weight Loss and Alcohol

cocktail
Donna Phelan

Donna Phelan

There has been a lot of discussion in the media of late regarding the health benefits of alcohol consumption.  Study after study has shown that moderate (1-2 drinks daily) amounts of alcohol can lower the risk of heart disease by as much as 25% as well as increase the levels of “good cholesterol.”  Alcohol carries a lot of social benefits as well – turning shy people into the life of the party; teaching white men how to dance; and who hasn’t enjoyed life that much more thru a pair of “beer goggles”!  Yes, I’ve heard ALL these arguments from those in our weight loss program trying to convince me that a bit of wine has so many positive benefits that surely it can’t hurt their weight loss.  Can it?

cocktailThere are people on both sides of this argument, but personally, I see no harm with most things – in moderation – for individuals who are living a healthy lifestyle.  The key part of that last sentence, however, is healthy lifestyle. The fact is, alcohol has NO PLACE in a weight loss regimen.  No place.  The reasons for this are many.

First off, alcohol is empty calories. There are many foods which you will never see on any sensible weight loss plan that still have some nutritional value – not so with alcohol.   Alcohol lowers blood sugar levels.  This leaves you feeling hungry, a recipe for overeating.  Alcohol also dehydrates the drinker.  We all know the importance of staying properly hydrated for facilitating weight loss as well as supporting our work out regimen.  And, despite the drowsy relaxed, feeling that usually accompanies its consumption, alcohol has been shown to actually disrupt sleep.   Proper rest is another key element of the weight loss process.

But, here’s the kicker…  according to the Mayo Clinic, alcohol inhibits fat loss. I could provide the scientific explanation for this, but here is the short version:  your body metabolizes alcohol differently than it metabolizes fat and carbs.  When you put alcohol in, your body begins working to eliminate it from your system immediately, and the processing of food becomes secondary.  This leads to food being stored and synthesized as fat, which can lead to weight gain.

Alcohol GlassesThe evidence is pretty clear – moderate alcohol consumption CAN result in some health benefits.  But, don’t kid yourself.  A healthy lifestyle produces similar results, without the hangover!   See you in the gym!

Learning to Exercise - Donna Phelan
Donna Phelan

Donna Phelan

One of the programs offered at my gym is a weight loss motivation and exercise education program designed to enable participants to lose 20 pounds in 10 weeks.  With each session, the results vary from wildly successful to mediocre.  But, while the results can never be predicted, I can always count on one thing:  There is at least one person who, whether she knows it or not, is really not there to lose weight.  She is there to be “excused.”

Typically, this person has tried and failed to lose weight for years.  Diets “don’t work” for her.  She is too busy.  NO ONE could possibly have more to deal with in their life than she does.  She is there because she wants to hear, “By golly, you are right! Your life is simply too busy, your responsibilities too great.  You are not to blame for your obesity.”  For every solution you offer her to overcome a challenge she faces, she has a reason for why that won’t work.  She is “the exception.”

“I can’t trust my husband to take care of the kids.”  “My friends give me grief when I don’t drink and eat.”  “My hairstyle takes an hour every night.”  (Yikes!)  Believe it or not, every one of the above excuses has been used by participants in our program. My personal favorite:  “I have a lot of plants to water.” (Are the plants in different states??!)

I recall a discussion with a client (call her H2-no) about retraining herself to drink more water – important for successful weight loss.  I built this habit for myself by taking a glass of water with me EVERY time I got in my car.  The water was right next to me, always ready to be sipped.  BUT…H2-no never drove far enough to finish off a glass of water.  I pointed out that she could accomplish the same thing by keeping a glass of water on her desk at work.  BUT…the ice in the glass would melt before H2-no could finish the water, and the water HAD to be cold.  I suggested that H2-no bring refillable containers of water to work and keep them in the office fridge.  She could then use a smaller mug, and keep the ice fresh all day with trips to the freezer, if necessary.  BUT…and I quote, “Donna, I’m not going to mess with carrying in water or walking to the refrigerator to get more ice!”

One of my favorite cartoons shows a doctor counseling a patient.  The patient is obese, in his underwear and wearing a startled expression as the doctor asks, “What fits your busy schedule better, exercising one hour a day or being dead 24 hours a day?”  In our 24/7, run and race world, finding time to make your fitness and health a priority will be one of the biggest challenges you face.  But, no one is a helpless victim of circumstance – the control is in your hands.

Yes!  It’s a choice!
